A meet was conducted for 60 wheelchair bound people with Spinal Chord Injuries (SCI) on September 24, 2023 in Hyderabad. People, who due to road accidents have been rendered paralytic for life. People who don’t want sympathy but empathy.
They had 2 asks:
1) Can you request the Hyderabad Metro Train team to make the entrance to the stations accessible? The trains are accessible – the entrance to the station is not!
2) Can awareness be spread to make bathrooms in public places accessible?
The people with SCI have to wear adult diapers for bladder control because most bathrooms are not PWD / People With Disabilities friendly.
Don’t forget that they have to be physically lifted for every activity that requires movement.
There’s an organization called I Am Possible (NGO) that’s run by a dynamic lady called Mrs. Sweety Bagga in Hyderabad. A little girl was born to her when she was 20 years old but in 1983, Sweety ji was involved in a bus accident.
At age 20 Sweety ji was rendered paralyzed, waist downwards. It’s been 40 difficult years since that accident but Sweety ji continues to be a beacon of hope to so many.
Her NGO distributes wheelchairs (INR 12,000/- / USD 150) to underprivileged people with SCI. But she needs sponsors. Telangana has 1000s of people who have Spinal Chord Injuries / SCI.
600 SCI people are part of SCIAT / Spinal Chord Injuries Association of Telangana.
