3rd Round Table Discussion

3rd Round Table Discussion

Third quartelry meeting

The Third Quarterly Meeting of T-Social Impact Group is focused on “CSR & Women Empowerment”, in association with the Department of Women Development & Child Welfare. The fact that the youngest state of India, since its inception has made the issue of women’s rights a primary focus is evident through various schemes like Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak Scheme, KCR Kit Scheme, Bangaru Talli Scheme, Arogya Lakshmi Scheme, Bharosa – Support Center for Women & Children, to name a few of many.

Although the interventions made by the state with the support of the Department of Women Development and Child Welfare are highly laudable, there are still areas which require the constant support of corporates through their technical, financial and volunteering assistance.

In the state of Telangana, there is a profound gap in girls education especially at the higher education level, the gap being more pronounced for marginalised communities such as SC and ST population at a dismal 12.7 and 10.8 respectively (Telangana Social Development report, pg 109). In addition to low education attainment, the labour force participation (LFPR) of urban females is one-third (14.9 per cent) of their rural counterparts (46.2 per cent), further, the ratio semi-literate/ illiterate women in employment are much higher (Telangana Social Development report, pg 87). This raises multiple questions firstly, illiterate women may experience the push factors towards labour force participation and there is a need to develop upskill them so that the nature of their employment/ work improves. There is also a need to understand the importance of appropriate opportunities for educated women such that they can enter and retain their employment. Thus the scope and nature of support in skill development of women are immense.

According to the Telangana CSR Outlook Report, 2018 prepared by NGOBOX, out of INR 247.70 Cr of CSR spent in Telangana in the financial year 2016-17, only 2% has been spent for Women Empowerment projects. This calls for an urgent need for the corporates, actively conducting their CSR activities in Telangana, to focus on women’s issues as well. The Third Quarterly Meeting of T-Social Impact Group is designed to facilitate productive discussions between the department head and CSR heads of corporates on how corporates can provide effective, meaningful and sustainable assistance to the Department of Women Development & Child Welfare through their CSR activitie
